During the pandemic, I started working on a collection of intimate pieces for a series called Screen Time. Using smart phone sized scale, these works call upon the viewer to explore them in the familiar manner that we often share with digital screens. The work in this series comments on the sensory ways in which we interact with and give our attention to personal digital devices. Observing both the elegant and abrupt human mannerisms that we have come to develop while operating such devices. Noticing the gesture of “the swipe, the tap, the scroll” and the ever-present “selfie” I see a connection between art and these moments repetitively strung together. The “screen” has become more often the lens through which we now view art, whether in our own search or presented to us. By offering this work as a parody, a sort of “art phone” I invite viewers to directly engage with the work hand held.
This work is part of an ongoing series.
